How to throw a heart.

The exhibition opened on the 19th May. The next day the wind and rain arrived! My work has (fingers crossed) so far survived the elements. Who knows what would happen if we had a heatwave. Another 20 days to go.

Tomorrow I go to Cill Rialaig, an artist residence in Ballinskelligs in Kerry for 2 weeks. Looking forward to drawing ( including wire, fleece, fibres, pencils, charcoal, paint, etc)....wondering would it be easier to be a painter....the car is full of everything I might need.

Red Cross is laid onto the grass and dealing with the elements.....the weather...animals...people....and probably most interestingly, the growing of the grass. The piece can only get better!
National Drawing Day is tomorrow 28th May. Filament are in Airfield from 11am to 3pm. Come along and take part.

Filament in Airfield

At the moment I am working towards Latitudes, a Filament Exhibition in Airfield. The opening is on the 18th May and will run for a month. The CCOI and Dunlaoghaire/Rathdown Arts Office have given us funding towards the exhibition which will include National Drawing Day activities and some public workshops.

Artist in Action at Harrogate

Harrogate Knit & Stitch was an amazing show. The photo here shows Sheila Jordan and me working and chatting! The amazing dried plants on the table were given to me at the show from a local woman's garden.I was using discharge paste which creates effects on fabric like a charcoal drawing but unfortunately creates a very bad smell.....when heated.

Yesterday evening Julie, Andy, Patrick and I installed our work in Shutterbug. We were helped by Steven Aylin (luckily because he is tall) and Alan Ragget (who has a straight eye). The space is a fantastic venue and worth a visit to see the building and to meet Eoghain and Blainaid Hennessy who run an exciting creative photography and styling service.....the Endangered Crew could defininetely do with a a makeover!

Endangered Open Days & Exhibition

Endangered have 3 Open Weekends during the Callan Festival and Arts Week.
Four of the group, Julie Cusack, Andrew Ryan, Patrick O'Connor and I are exhibiting in Shutterbug from 7th August for Arts Week.

Endangered Open Days in the Workhouse in Callan are on Saturday 31st July, Sunday 1st August, Saturday 7th, Sunday 8th, Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th from 11am to 2pm.

Installation in Courthouse

  Today was the second day of the installation by 'Nail to Nail' of my work in the Courthouse.

Its fantastic to see this project in the space it was made for.  The building is beautiful and eco friendly with geo-thermal heating.

We finished today with the sculpture in place, leaving the string to be cut to correct level in the morning. Everything was locked up when Alan saw a swallow flying through the building. The building was reopened and eventually the swallow left (it must have some form of radar to find the door) after a discussion about bird droppings and whether the bird would peck at the fleece. Not good for my blood pressure and definitely not in my job spec!

Studio work

Im still waiting to finish the Courthouse job, so in studio slowly building up new ideas. The top photo is of a piece in progress (or stopped!) that I hung up out of my way. I didnt like the face so I covered it......way more interesting!
The other photo is of dry felt building up into the base like a canvas for stitch. I love the fact that I can work into 3D pieces and get to the back.

Studio Work

I have just learnt to crochet thanks to Cristina. I don't think I will ever make anything practical with it but I love the ability of growing the fibre anywhere using this technique.
I have started to stitch into the felt....its exciting to be able to stitch onto built shapes. The photos included here show working ideas.

Studio Work

Back in my Studio today, supposedly cleaning the space (that was the plan) when the sun came into the space and I got excited about the shadows it was creating. I started to photograph and draw the shadows created by this wire and stitched form. Its brillant to play again.

Easter

Today we bagged, weighed and untangled all the pieces. There was lots of help from people home for holidays including Richard and Omar.

Health & Safety

I received my Health & Safety Statement today. Interesting document which was obviously taken very seriously, looking at these photos of me tied up and Sarah up a ladder untieing knots.....mine apparently.

Cristina ties up all the spare fibre into beautiful little bundles.

Seriously though I have a fantastic Health & Safety Document if anyone wants to read it.

Rain

Richard, Liam, Daniel and Martin put up scaffolding to thread heads onto. I managed to get a photo here of Richard but the others were wearing hoodies!

On the way home, stuck again at the train tracks I photographed the rain on the window.......must be school holidays.

Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day.......the Stringing goes on and on and on..... but there were some highlights today. A visit from Roger and his mobile phone....a major unravelling of a knot which I have to take full blame for....a visit from Nail to Nail (obviously a highlight) to look at how the work will be hung in the Courthouse.....more stringing.....
