Crafted

Ive just finished the Crafted project with 3rd Class at GaoilscoĆl OsraĆ. A great class where they mono-printed, made fiber drawings on fabric and a huge fiber drawing on the grass all based on the Titanic.
The project is run/funded by the CCoI and the local Education Centers.

Open Studio

Today I took down my work from Open Studio an exhibition at the end of a 3 month residency in Kilkenny Arts Office. My plan for the residency (not really a big plan) was to not use fleece and to experiment with drawing and small work. Not using fleece meant not slowing the process...well when sculptural pieces take 3 months to make this was a good plan!
I had to trust in the process. The photographs shown here are one of a female head from a life drawing session. The following two are of Christy (one life size), a man who came in to chat to me. All the work shown is made with thread and insect pins. The opportunity in the Arts Office brought me back to my fascination with people, the conservations and differences. The opportunity also brought new ways of working with materials.

Lifedrawing in the RHA

Every Thursday I draw in the life room in the RHA in Dublin. Drawing is from 10am to 6pm. A long day but worth the drive and time. I see drawing as a major part of my practice which feeds into my textile/sculpture work.

Kilkenny Residency

Drawing is an important part of my residency and these two shots taken by Deirdre Gallagher show artist Daithi Houghlan drawing with me. Daithi's drawing are beautiful particularly in his use of line and what he leaves out of the drawing. Less is more!

Valley of the Squinting Windows

Images from Arts Office Residency looking at people on the street. The red stitch image reminds me of the book Valley of the Squinting Windows, written by Brinsley MacNamara in 1919.

Knit & Stitch 10th to 13th November

Work Titled 'Amen' to be shown this week at the Knit & Stitch with Filament.

Art's Office Day 5

Day 5 of photographing and the weather is grey. I have managed to photograph myself into the bottom two photos. I love the fact that I can see myself as a watcher and the people looking at me.

Arts Office Residency

Today I started my Residency in Kilkenny Arts Office. My studio has a large window looking out onto the street. These are just some of the photos I took during the day. I believe that because Kilkenny is such a small place that everyone looks at everyone else because they might know them and it would be rude not to say hello.

Filament exhibition breakdown.

When I first suggested this piece of work there were fears about the work surviving a month on the grass, would the weather and people damage it? Also the gardener was concerned that the grass wouldn't grow under the panels.
I was looking forward to removing the work today, a month after installation to see what had happened. It was exciting to see that the panels now looked like pillows, pushed up from underneath by the growing grass. Also most people had been incredibly respectful of the work walking around the piece. There were some small footprints of a child and of a bird which only added to the feel of the work.
When the panels were taken up the marks of the fabric were left behind in the longer grass.

Filament at Airfield

How to throw a heart....rain drops on box.

How to throw a heart.
The exhibition opened on the 19th May. The next day the wind and rain arrived! My work has (fingers crossed) so far survived the elements. Who knows what would happen if we had a heatwave. Another 20 days to go.

Tomorrow I go to Cill Rialaig, an artist residence in Ballinskelligs in Kerry for 2 weeks. Looking forward to drawing ( including wire, fleece, fibres, pencils, charcoal, paint, etc)....wondering would it be easier to be a painter....the car is full of everything I might need.

Latitudes

Red Cross

Red Cross

How to trow a Heart

How to throw a Heart
Photographs taken by Ross Costigan of my work in the exhibition Latitudes with Filament at Airfield until 19th June. All this work is outside. Red Cross is laid onto the grass and dealing with the elements.....the weather...animals...people....and probably most interestingly, the growing of the grass. The piece can only get better!
National Drawing Day is tomorrow 28th May. Filament are in Airfield from 11am to 3pm. Come along and take part.

At the moment I am working towards Latitudes, a Filament Exhibition in Airfield. The opening is on the 18th May and will run for a month. The CCOI and Dunlaoghaire/Rathdown Arts Office have given us funding towards the exhibition which will include National Drawing Day activities and some public workshops.

Artist in Action at Harrogate

Harrogate Knit & Stitch was an amazing show. The photo here shows Sheila Jordan and me working and chatting! The amazing dried plants on the table were given to me at the show from a local woman's garden.I was using discharge paste which creates effects on fabric like a charcoal drawing but unfortunately creates a very bad smell.....when heated.

Close up

Yesterday evening Julie, Andy, Patrick and I installed our work in Shutterbug. We were helped by Steven Aylin (luckily because he is tall) and Alan Ragget (who has a straight eye). The space is a fantastic venue and worth a visit to see the building and to meet Eoghain and Blainaid Hennessy who run an exciting creative photography and styling service.....the Endangered Crew could defininetely do with a a makeover!
